CREATING A CULTURE OF DISASTER PREVENTION FROM THE VISION OF THE MAYAN PEOPLE OF THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS OF GUATEMALA

Capacities and traditional knowledge of Indigenous Peoples were strengthened in risk management in the face of natural disasters and in the impacts of climate change in vulnerable communities of the Central Highlands of Guatemala

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT:

  • Creation of a risk map as an integrated management tool based on traditional and scientific knowledge for disaster prevention in more vulnerable municipalities of the CVK
  • Training in disaster planning, prevention and mitigation methodologies
  • Training for teachers to use a methodology that promotes a culture of risk prevention
  • Strengthening of community organizations in their structure, functions and norms, and in the application of disaster management tools
  • Radio spots broadcast on local radio stations in Spanish and Kaqchikel on early warning systems and disaster prevention
  • Printing of Kumatzines as educational play media for prevention and resilience to natural disasters
